TABITHA

As we march through the Demon Palace, grit burns within each of us. We all know the stakes are high, and failure is not an option. Whoever this arsehole Demon is that took my book, needs his arse kicking back to whatever rock he dragged it out from.

Drawing in a deep breath, I’m trying to keep steady and confident, although I’m shaking like a leaf inside. That shift was brutal. It’s not getting easier, but on the other side of the coin, it is getting easier to access. Which is, of course, annoying as fuck. “We have to be smart about this. No unnecessary risks.”

“Absolutely,” Luka agrees, his eyes scanning the corridors for any sign of danger.

“We need to be prepared for anything.” Gavriel holsters his bloodied ax and fixes me with a searching stare. Unsure of what he is looking for, I smile and flick my gaze elsewhere.

“Let’s find this dick and make him give me my book back,” I snarl, suddenly agitated. This is a fucking disaster. All of it. Everything. Nothing is going the way I expected it would. After defeating Azazel, I assumed all would be well, and I’d find my place in this world as its somewhat reluctant and naïve Queen. That has totally not happened and no one but the four men, Demons, around me seems to recognize my rule.

What a shitshow.

That has to change.

Entering the library of ancient books, we fan out, each taking a section to scour for any index that will give us class and sub-class of Demon.

I grab a dusty tome and start flipping through it, feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack. Only the needle is a Demon thief who has managed to evade us so far. And the problem is, we don’t even know if he is here or still on Earth.

As a thought starts to form in my mind, Valerian calls out from across the room.

“Anything?”

“Not yet,” I reply absently. “But we have to keep looking. If you say this book is our ticket to stability in Sanguisca, then we need it and not some red-eyed creep.”

“Hey!” Gavriel snaps, giving me a filthy glare from his red eyes.

Sheepishly, I give him a smile. “Sorry, not you, obviously. You are anything but creepy.”

Luka snorts with amusement but carries on searching as Gavriel turns back to the stacks with a huff.

Going back to the half-baked thought, I chew the inside of my lip. If I had a vision of this Demon and saw him with my book, who is to say I can’t have another one and learn more about him, even who he is or where he is?

“What are you thinking?” Azaan asks, sidling up beside me, a book in his hand.

“Just a random musing.”

“Random musings might be invaluable. Care to share?” He slams the book shut.

Catching Valerian’s attention, he joins us and folds his arms, giving me a glare from those blue eyes that caught my attention right at the beginning.
